Instead of its usual Veterans Day Chapel, the SSCCA community gathered on Friday, October 9, 2020, to celebrate a variety of service organizations. Following Morning Prayer, led by Pastor Eric Jorgensen, Headmaster John Dykes welcomed students, parents, and special guests to honor those who serve our country in the military as well as policemen, firemen, and rescue workers. Eighth grade students Andrew Cavrak, Cara Mattix, Lyndsey Spencer, and Jonathan Dykes read poems praising the bravery and dedication of all these different services. Charles Runkles, a veteran of two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, emphasized God’s sovereignty in his life in the Army and National Guard. In both the dangers and in the times of friendship and cultural exchange, God was guiding and protecting him, just as He does in each of our lives. This special Chapel ended with a moving flag raising led by Mr. Robert Reisig, Cryptologic Technician 2nd Class (Navy), Lt. Cdr David Gonzalez (U.S. Coast Guard), and Sea Cadets Andrew Cavrak (Seaman Apprentice) and Dylan Reisig (LC4). The congregation heartily sang the Star-Spangled Banner as they watched the Stars and Stripes unfurled against the brilliant blue sky above.
