First Fruits Farm is a non-profit Christian ministry dedicated to providing fresh, nutritious produce to those experiencing hunger in the Mid-Atlantic region. Since 2004, thousands of area volunteers have helped harvest over 16.5 million pounds of fruits and vegetables to share with local food banks, homeless shelters, soup kitchens and other food providers, and on October 2nd, SSCCA had the yearly opportunity to be a part of the harvest! After a few hours of enthusiastic hard work on a gorgeous day in Freeland, SSCCA students and staff harvested 17,000 pounds of potatoes. And these were no normal potatoes! Due to Covid 19, First Fruits had been unable to acquire their typical seed potatoes earlier in the season, so they planted a different type. Unbeknownst to them, the new type of potato turned out to be far more prolific and disease resistant than the type before, dramatically increasing the yield. They were also perfectly shaped and portioned to be used in First Fruit’s new bagging operation. To God be the glory!
